Things to know if you’re visiting Amsterdam

So I recently visited Amsterdam and had an absolutely amazing time there, you can read about my trip here if you’re interested.

I thought this would be a good post to do as there were a few things that I would have found helpful to know before I was going. This is just going to be a short-ish post listing a few things to bear in mind if you’re visiting Amsterdam.

There are bikes fucking everywhere – Literally everywhere you turn you feel like you’re going to be hit by a bike. It’s cute if you rent a bike as it is super easy to get around but just be careful as they are everywhere. Motorbikes and scooters are also in bike lanes which was a bit of a surprise at first.

You can and most likely will walk everywhere -Make sure you have decent/comfy shoes to walk in.

Buy tickets online for popular attractions – I was so gutted that I didn’t manage to get tickets to the Anne Frank house as it was one of the major things I wanted to do. Unfortunately tickets were sold out online a while in advance and there were no tickets available when we got there.

Plan your day – I wish we had done this better on the second day, as we didn’t plan where we would be going and when we sort of just ended up walking back on ourselves a lot.

Some places only accept cards and not cash – Some places had signs to say this was to stop theft but yeah it’s something to keep in mind as I know a lot of tourists don’t always take their cards with them.

The difference between coffeeshop/cafe/coffee house – A coffeeshop is a cafe that sells joints, space cakes and other weed/hash products. I read somewhere that places cannot sell both weed and alcohol (I assume because they can be quite dangerous to mix). A cafe is like a bar or restaurant (this one really threw me at first). Coffee house is a place that sells coffee and cakes. Some of the places can be easy to tell the difference and a lot of the coffeeshops are down lanes rather than on the main streets but it’s just something worth keeping in mind.

Make sure you try the fries – They are so tasty, you’ll be so so glad you had some. Also make sure you have them with mayo because dutch mayo is spectacular, not sure what the difference is but it tastes amazing.

here’s another; if you hear honking or a ringing bell, get the f out of the way because there’s likely a tram coming. The point about learning the differences between coffeeshops and coffee houses is v. v. important too, i walked into one coffeeshop too many, forgetting what they were and I was always so confused haha.

Definitely something to think about re the Anne Frank house. We did get in there, but it was something like our second or third visit. Once when I looked, the tickets were completely sold out 2 months in advance, so if you can, definitely start planning early.
