So I spend 8 hours binge watching The Defenders (who can resist aye). I’m a big Marvel fan and have thoroughly enjoyed the Netflix shows (not so much Iron Fist sorry), was so obsessed with Jessica Jones at first, I mean how creepy was Killgrave (you go, David Tennant).
So it’s self explanatory where this is going but feel I should say there will be spoilers ahead.
I did enjoy this series. I don’t think it was the strongest out of the others for sure but it was enjoyable and definitely not the weakest link.
The first thing that bugged me about this series was the amount of supporting characters they had. It felt like they were just trying to fit every character from the other series’ into this one and it just felt like too much as they didn’t have enough time to focus on them or even really give some of the characters relevance.
Iron Fist also really bugs me. I desperately want to like him and let it go but I feel like every other sentance he says contains ‘I am immortal Iron Fist’ like ye mate we get it. I did really enjoy Luke Cage calling him out on his privelege bullshit though, so go them for that. I feel like there were a few more jokes at how ridiculous he was at times (mainly from Luke Cage) but Iron Fist just bugs me as hes a very me me me character.
Another thing, why does no one believe each other? They literally live in a universe where they have abilities/aliens/superheroes and they’re all there like ‘nah can’t believe that it’s too far fetched’. Made me want to just shout at the screen like ‘bitch you have super strength’.
I did really like Matt Murdock/Daredevil though, I felt he was definitely a strength for The Defenders.
My favourite part had to be in the Chinese restaurant where they’re discussing all these plans over Chinese food because Iron Fist has said the owner said they can only stay if they eat.
I really enjoyed the first scene where they all started to come together at the Midland Circle offices, just as Luke Cage smashes through the wall I knew we were in for a great fight. It was exciting when it became apparent they were all going to turn up there at the same time as they all seemed to have the light bulb moment at the same time and headed over to fight the hand.
I think the four of them did gel well as a team and as the series went on they did become much more of a group. I was glad that Netflix decided to do 8 episodes instead of the usual 13 as this avoided them dragging the story out too much and stopped filler episodes. I liked the four together as a team even though Iron Fist did bug me, I felt that all together they were likeable and worked well.
I don’t really know what to say about that ending. The whole guy falling onto the bomb detonator thing did crack me up. I’ve heard a lot of ideas about what people think it mean and where it’ll go from here. I feel as Matt Murdock survived that building collapsing on him that it is very likely Elektra did too (like she’s already been brought back once) but guess will just have to wait for Season 3 of Daredevil to find that out. Feel like the ending was that typical like ‘Oh were meant to think he’s dead even though we all know he’s still alive’ (literally all I could think was season 3 of Daredevil is confirmed).
Overall I did enjoy the series and think I will definitely give it another watch sometimes as I watched it all in one block I feel like I may have missed something. I do recommend giving it a watch if you haven’t already. Would love to know what you thought about it and if you agree/disagree with anything I’ve said. Which Marvel series was your favourite?
