So yesterday I finished Jessica Jones Season 2. I decided to write a post on Season 2 and my thoughts about it as I felt like I had a lot to say about the series and I’m a big marvel fan in general. I wrote a post about the Defenders TV series which you can read here.
I was so so so excited for Season 2 of Jessica Jones as I am a massive fan of the first series and in my opinion I think that it’s the strongest Netflix Marvel TV show. I was so obsessed with the first season. Kilgrave was such an amazing character and freaked me out so much, David Tennant did such an amazing job of playing him.
I’m just going to start off by saying that I loved how Season 2 of Jessica Jones came out on International Women’s Day (March 8th). It’s just such great planning, Jessica is such a bad ass lady. Jessica is such a unique female character, even though she has some issues she’s such a strong person.
Anyway, if you’re yet to watch Season 2 or you haven’t finished it yet then I’m just warning you that this post will contain spoilers.
Overall I did enjoy this season of Jessica Jones. I did feel gripped throughout most of the series (you may have guessed this from me watching it all in 3 days lol). The first few episodes are sort of build up and leave you with a lot of questions about what is going on. I did enjoy these episodes as it made me want to keep watching to find out what was happening and who was responsible. There was a lot of mystery surrounding certain characters and what direction the story was going to head in.
Focusing on the first few episodes, I just want to say that I’m super glad that ‘The Whizzer’ actually had powers. when he came in and said that he could run super fast but only when he was nervous and they all just looked at him like he was delusional I was just hoping he was going to come back (like plz prove them wrong). I thought that this was an interesting start to the season as the series of interviews with different people seemed like it was just Jessica trying to take her mind off of things and find a new client. I really liked how this little part actually fitted in with the bigger story. I was kind of shocked how The Whizzer was killed off early on as I thought that now another powered individual had been introduced that maybe he would help out a little or something but his death sort of kick started Jessica’s investigation.
“With great power comes great mental illness’, I liked this little nod to Spiderman’s classic ‘With great power comes great responsibility’. I also liked how reflected the darker side of having superpowers.
So because of the large focus on Jessica’s origin and her family I feel like the whole big mum reveal wasn’t that shocking. I originally thought it was going to be her brother that was still alive (I thought that maybe he was going to be the hooded guy that turned out to be Simpson), so when they revealed it was Jessica’s mum I feel like it wasn’t all that shocking. Because of the emphasis on her family I feel like it was the only way that they could take the story.
I feel like there wasn’t really one main villain in Season 2 of Jessica Jones. In the first season we had Kilgrave and a lot of our attention was focused on him, whereas in Season 2 I feel like it was all a bit windy and confusing. A lot of the characters did some questionable things and for a few episodes it was hard to tell whether or not Jessica’s mum was a villain or not. Alisa’s anger comes from all of the experiments that Karl performed on her (it’s easy to see how she’s lost a grip on things), I’m still not really sure what I think of her character. She did kill a hell of a lot of people so I was routing for her to go to prison.
I really liked Episode 7, it was a flashback episode that gave us a glimpse into the past. Seeing Trish as an addict was super weird but she did it so well. Her song ‘I Want Your Cray Cray’ is absolutely awful but I love how they’ve shown her as the sort of ‘typical child star’ like trying to break into music and going off of the rails a bit. Seeing her like that brought a whole new angle to her character. Seeing Jessica with Stirling made me so sad because you just knew he was going to end up brutally murdered somehow (surprise, surprise). I really liked how it showed her getting her iconic leather jacket and when I saw his club name was ‘Alias’ I did a little scream like, that’s where she got the name from. But I can’t help also wondering if this guy was such a vital part of Jessica’s life and of her becoming who she is, then why had we not heard of his character before the flashback? I also kind of low key hated Stirling after he offered Jessica as a bodyguard.
The thing that I have the biggest issue with in this series is, why the fuck did they have a TV facing Alisa’s cell on showing the news?? They know she’s super strong and gets really angry so why would they let her see news of her lover being killed. I just don’t understand it.
I really liked how they explored the characters a bit more in this Season. I feel like we got to learn more about Malcom and I’m so glad that he finally decided to leave the bullshit behind and just start up his own thing (although I was so sad when he shaved his hair off). I was not a fan of Malcom and Trish sleeping together, no no no. Trish was annoying me a bit in this season anyway, I feel like her story line got old quite fast and then when it turned into the whole ‘she wants powers to help people’ I was like ugh. Also from the first episode I thought Griffin was shady because he was so ‘Mr Perfect’ and then all those weird phone calls and being on her laptop but I feel like that went nowhere and it kind of confused me.
I enjoyed seeing a different side to some of the relationships as well. Trish and Jessica’s relationship was strained throughout a lot of the series and it was fun to see a different dynamic to the characters. Watching Jessica try and find out she was going to accept her mum back into her life was super interesting too. Krysten Ritter did an absolutely amazing job, I feel like she showed so many different emotions and showed a whole new side to Jessica.
I feel like I’ve probably rambled on enough now. I did enjoy Season 2 of Jessica Jones but I did however think the first was stronger.
What did you think of the Series? What were some of your favourite episodes?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
